The Iron Range Historical Society has a collection of more than 25,000 photographs in 85 albums of Range people, cities, schools, mines, and transportation. Many of these photos are unique and original. They are intended to be used (with permission) as per the Society’s mission in displays, family histories, books, museum exhibits, newspaper articles, and for any other purpose as proposed by a requestor.
Many large framed photos are also owned by IRHS. Additionally, the Iron Range Historical Society owns a massive collection of Ely, Minnesota, photographs and memorabilia, named the Brownell collection, which is currently on loan to our affiliate member, the Ely-Winton Historical Society.
As an ongoing project, volunteers with the Society have taken on the enormous task of digitizing all the Society’s photographs. The goal is twofold; for digital preservation and for better access to anyone wishing to look through them. This project includes putting the physical photographs into archival sleeves, which will preserve the originals, and updating the photo index.
Below is just a small sampling of what the Iron Range Historical Society has in its photograph library. If you are able to identify any of these photos please let the Society know.
